Southern Exposure has joined up with their new neighbor and old friend, Intersection for the Arts, to present a series of juried projects. With the same commitment to innovative, experimental, and risk-taking art we collectively decided on the theme, GROUNDED? What does it mean to be grounded and what does the journey in search of grounding look like? Artists were invited to submit work that responded to this idea in some way, shape or form.

intervention in the heartland

On June 18, 2006, The Pink Dot Experiment was presented at the National Womens Studies Association Annual Conference in Oakland, California. The project served as a model for interventionist strategies. Feminist Intervention in the Heartland was an interdisciplinary and theoretical multimedia presentation on 1) the challenges posed to feminist educators in the Midwest, specifically Southern Ohio, a region that embodies a growing cultural conservatism 2) the creative use of the classroom as a space for resistance to this latest cultural backlash.

over 60 Ohio University students gathered under the leadership of stacy asher and dohyoung sung to re-present the black spots of chewing gum that dotted the sidewalks. the old spots were painted with non-toxic, flourescent pink tempera paint.

within an hour and a half both sides of the sidewalk were covered. the change in the landscape suprised town inhabitants and they wondered what the meaning of it was.

it started to rain that afternoon and within a couple of hours the spots had returned to their normal state.
